Faithful at-home charging can keep the plug-in-hybrid Grand Cherokee away from the gas pumps, but bringing one home won't be cheap.

Hearing the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe described as the "most fuel-efficient Jeep ever" gives us the warm fuzzies. It feels like a win for the world and makes us want to parade through an aisle at Whole Foods, high-fiving every farm-to-fork enthusiast until our palms turn red. But while the 4xe's EPA-estimated 56 MPGe and 26 miles of electric-only range are good for a Grand Cherokee, the plug-in-hybrid option is an expensive one.

That's not to downplay the effort by Jeep to reduce its wonderfully luxurious SUV's usage of gasoline. The Grand Cherokee, which was redesigned last year, is an absolute honey on the road. With a firm brake pedal, linear steering, and a smooth ride, the Grand Cherokee moves with confidence. Its lavish interior and robust four-wheel-drive system make it akin to a Kia Telluride that's graduated from off-road boot camp. Unlike its Wrangler 4xe plug-in-hybrid sibling, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is subdued and quiet at speed. At idle, however, a grumpy 46 decibels from the inline-four echo throughout the cabin.

A 270-hp turbo 2.0-liter and two electric motors bring the total output to 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, a combination potent enough to make passengers ask, "This is a four-cylinder?" (which, really, is the best compliment a four-cylinder can hope for). We noticed some hesitation when accelerating hard from low speed as the gas engine and electric motor bickered over whose turn it was.

In the Wrangler, we noted this powertrain's rocky transitions between gas and electric propulsion, although they were somewhat lost amid the Wrangler's general cacophony. In the vastly more polished Grand Cherokee, the powertrain's hesitation and its abrupt transitions stand out.

Eventually, the powertrain suffered a more serious fault, and the hybrid system went silent. As a result, we were unable to record an as-tested fuel economy, nor can we provide you with the 4xe's 75-mph highway fuel-economy results.

We were able to perform instrumented testing before the hybrid-system failure and found that the 4xe is the quickest version of the new Grand Cherokee. It springs to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and hits 100 mph in 13.9 seconds, right as it reaches a quarter-mile. That's 0.3 second quicker to 60 mph and 1.3 seconds sooner to 100 than the discontinued V-8 version. When it comes to lugging, the 4xe's 6000-pound maximum towing capacity is 200 pounds short of the V-6 and 1200 less than the dead V-8 model.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe starts at $61,660, which is $16,830 more than the base four-wheel-drive V-6 Laredo. The 4xe, though, skips the Laredo trim and is available only in Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve grades. Comparing like trims, the 4xe's upcharge over the V-6 variants with four-wheel drive ranges from $8685 to $10,010—although that can be at least partially offset by the PHEV's $7500 federal tax credit.

Our Overland test rig rumbled in with a $77,525 price tag. The two largest contributions to its bill were optional packages. A Luxury Tech Group IV ($2155) included nappa leather seats with a massaging front row, wireless device charging, and window shades for the back seats. An Advanced Protech Group III ($2235) added head-up display, night vision, and additional driver-assistance features.

This higher-trim model also had the available 10.3-inch front passenger interactive display screen. Taking the opportunity to nerd out, we connected Valve's Steam Deck handheld gaming PC via an HDMI cable while waiting for a takeout order. Although playing the video game SnowRunner in a snowy parking lot sounds ironic and fun, we found the screen to be incredibly dim, even at night with the brightness fully cranked.

Owners with short commutes may be able to avoid gas stations for months, bouncing between the workplace and home, where a typical 240-volt charging connection to the 4xe's 7.2-kW onboard charger can juice up the roughly 14.0-kWh battery in about 2.5 hours. For folks plugging into a standard wall socket, the charge could take eight to 15 hours, depending on the home’s outlet. However, footing the bill for the pricey Grand Cherokee 4xe just to avoid gas stations seems like an overpriced convenience.

The Jeep Renegade was launched back in 2015 – and it was a very new direction for the American brand. A big part of the company’s appeal is the image of off-road adventuring exemplified by Jeep’s Wrangler, but cars that are that good off-road generally involve a lot of compromise, cost and discomfort when 90% of your driving is on-road and in-town. So, the Renegade was designed to be more sophisticated, refined and comfortable.

2021 Jeep Renegade 4xe - Whitby Abbey

There are few direct rivals for the Renegade, but many alternatives – quite a few of which come from Jeep’s parent firm Stellantis. If you can do without four-wheel drive, there’s the Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008 or Ford Puma. Or, if you absolutely need the extra traction, you can opt for the mechanically similar Fiat 500X (which is made in the same factory as the Renegade).

Small 4x4s are rare indeed, but for the cost of a two-wheel drive Renegade you may also want to look at the top-spec Dacia Duster, the Toyota Yaris Cross i-AWD and the Suzuki Vitara or S-Cross.

What sets the Jeep Renegade apart from all of these competitors, though, is its distinctive styling. Its boxy body appeals to the Tonka toy-loving child in all of us – and it offers a reasonable amount of passenger space inside despite its short length. Its high driving position, light controls and hatchback-like handling makes it a good choice for those that crave the attitude of an SUV, but spend most of their time driving in towns and cities.

Jeep Renegade 4xe charging point with charge LEDs

With several years of evolution since release, the Jeep Renegade now comes with a couple of front-wheel drive models you could consider instead of a family hatchback, and a plug-in hybrid 4xe model with four-wheel drive for traditional Jeep off-road prowess. More recently, the brand introduced a new self-charging hybrid model, which is an ideal mid-ground between the standard petrol and the PHEV.

Over the next few pages we’ll be thoroughly reviewing all aspects of the Jeep Renegade and rating them in our verdict. Our scores consider the driving experience, how pleasant the interior is, how practical the cabin is and what it’ll cost you to run, as well as the Renegade’s overall value and competitiveness against current rivals.

An old-school formula brings modern levels of comfort and technology to Jeep's new full-size SUVs.

It's hardly that simple, of course. Unlike the Ram 1500, which the big Jeep's frame is derived from, the Wagoneer benefits from an independent rear suspension that uses a lot of aluminum, as well as a number of other chassis tweaks to improve rigidity and on-road manners. Still, these aren't lightweight trucks any more than they are small ones. Even with its composite liftgate and aluminum hood, fenders, and doors, the Wagoneer checks in at 6200 pounds. Further up the line, the more feature-filled Grand Wagoneer can rise as high as 6450. All of that heft is hard to ignore when maneuvering these brutes, independent suspensions or not.

2022 jeep wagoneer

Around town, a little residual body-on-frame jiggle runs through the structure after abrupt inputs or bumps. Out on twisting roads, the big truck rolls—you should really let the inertia settle before turning the wheel in the opposite direction—and to maintain the vehicle's path, the steering needs constant attention. That softness pays dividends on the highway, where the ride is quite plush and appropriate for road trips. The throwback two-spoke steering wheel offers a vague connection to what's happening at the tires, and the overall feel is light.

Buyers will have to parse through seven Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer trim levels to find their best match. Wagoneers come three ways, all powered by Chrysler's Hemi 392-hp 5.7-liter V-8, which is backed by the company's 48-volt eTorque hybrid system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The electric assist adds 130 lb-ft of torque on initial throttle application and makes for one of the more seamless start-stop systems we've experienced. Equipped with the optional 3.92:1 axle ratio, the combo moves the Wagoneer's mass off the line smartly, and the smooth V-8 doesn't leave you wanting on the highway.
VIEW PHOTOS

Grand Wagoneers come in four versions, each with a beefy 6.4-liter V-8. A GW-exclusive intake manifold and exhaust cap the fun at 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque—14 horses and 20 lb-ft short of what the engine makes in a Scat Pack Challenger. A robust torque curve gives an easy initial surge; stay in it and you'll find that the big V-8 loves to run to the top of its rev range. It sounds great, too, if a little out of place. There's no hybrid system here, but like the 5.7-liter, cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing help make the most out of a gallon. The Grand Wagoneer feels a bit livelier with its larger engine—Jeep claims a 60-mph time of 6.0 seconds—but the lesser Wagoneer, with its electrically assisted 5.7, seems quicker than its claimed 7.3-second time to 60.

Buyers might be more interested in the EPA fuel-economy numbers: Four-wheel-drive Wagoneers carry labels of 15 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway; their 17-mpg-combined rating is 1 mpg short of the Chevy Tahoe with a 5.3-liter and the Ford Expedition. Grand Wagoneers manage up to 15/13/18 mpg (combined/city/highway), which makes them similarly less efficient than the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. The soon-to-be-released rear-wheel-drive Wagoneer Series I will be good for an additional 1 mpg combined.

In a move that attempts to elevate the Wagoneer above the rest of the Jeep lineup (marketers call the Wagoneer a "premium extension of the Jeep brand"), there isn't a single Jeep badge on it. Yet there's no mistaking it for anything but a Jeep, and all-terrain tires are offered on the Wagoneer Series II, with 18-inch wheels, and on the Wagoneer Series III, with 20s. There are three optional drivelines: Quadra-Trac I brings full-time all-wheel drive to the Series II, the Quadra-Trac II in the Wagoneer Series III adds a two-speed transfer case and hill-descent control, and at the top of the line, any Wagoneer can be had with Quadra-Drive II, a four-wheel-drive system that nets an electronically controlled locking rear differential. That's standard on the Grand Wagoneer, optional on lesser models.

Wagoneers come standard with a load-leveling setup for the rear suspension. Four-corner Quadra-Lift air springs are optional on the Series II; Series III and Grand Wagoneer models get it standard. The system can raise the truck by 1.7 inches to give it 10.0 inches of ground clearance and up to 24 inches of water-fording capability. Additionally, it'll drop the truck 0.6 inch at speed for better aerodynamics, plus it can lower the vehicle when parked an additional inch to aid ingress and egress.

But all of that kind of misses the point: If you're shopping cars this big, the last thing you're thinking of is hitting fire roads—or for that matter, performance on winding country roads. No, it's what's inside the box that matters, and Jeep designers nailed it.

The Grand Wagoneer in particular offers a legitimately luxurious experience, not just for its many creature comforts, but in the interior design itself. There's a lot of wood flowing through the dash and center console. If sculpted American walnut isn't your taste, you can opt for aluminum trim instead. The seats are large and comfortable, and as you might guess, all rows inside the gigantic cabin are easily accessible. High-end details are dotted throughout, such as the knurled-aluminum gear-selection knob and the leather-wrapped start button (yes, you read that correctly). In typical Jeep fashion, the cabin is filled with reminders of what you're driving. "Grand Wagoneer" appears in large lettering on the steering wheel, the sides of the seats, and inlaid in the wood in front of the passenger's seat.

2022 jeep grand wagoneer

The upright, boxy exterior shape is sure to polarize, but that form gives the Wagoneer best-in-class overall passenger volume, second- and third-row legroom, third-row headroom, and cargo volume behind the third row. It's seriously roomy inside, enough so to warrant an optional camera for front-row passengers to see who threw something at them from the wayback.

The Grand Wagoneer features four screens up front. In addition to the digital gauge cluster, there's the big center touchscreen—12.3 inches in the Grand and 10.3 in Wagoneer—and, below it, a smaller screen for secondary controls such as seat heaters and massage. An unexpected feature: The bottom screen can flip up, revealing a useful storage cubby with power outlets behind it. Front-seat passengers get their own display flush mounted in the dash.

2022 jeep grand wagoneer
The sheer amount of equipment that Jeep's leviathans offer is impressive. Each trim has an extensive list of options, many unique to particular trim levels. There's an available head-up display with night vision, all the driver-assistance stuff you can imagine, Amazon Fire TV integration in the middle-row screens, and two high-end McIntosh audio systems, the grandest being a 23-speaker, 1375-watt monster with a 12-inch subwoofer. Any lingering small-big-car thoughts will be crushed by the pricing structure. Wagoneer Series II and III 4x4 models arrive at the end of the summer and start at $72,995 and $77,995, although the rear-drive version will drop the entry point to just below $59,995 when it goes on sale in the first half of 2022. Grand Wagoneer models open up at $88,995, with the top-of-the-line Series III starting at an appropriately grand $105,995.

Jeep's new plug-in-hybrid Wrangler promises 375 horsepower and 49 MPGe but struggles to smoothly blend its gas and electric power.

The 4xe (pronounced "four by E") sandwiches a 270-hp turbocharged inline-four between a 44-hp motor connected through the accessory belt at the front and a 134-hp motor taking the place of the transmission's torque converter at the back. The motors draw power from a roughly 14.0-kWh lithium-ion battery stashed under the rear seats. Whether the 4xe is running in Electric mode or as a hybrid, torque is routed to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and a transfer case that offers rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive (4WD Auto), and high- or low-range four-wheel drive for the off-road crowd.

2021 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon 4xe

HIGHS: Guilt-free electric motoring, go-anywhere capability, one vehicle that does the job of many.

In other words, the power flow through the Wrangler 4xe's running gear is, at times, harder to follow than the plot of Inception. At least the net results are easy to understand: 375 horsepower, an EPA fuel economy of 49 MPGe with the battery charged, and 21 miles of guilt-free electric driving before the gas engine kicks on. The 4xe promises to combine contradictory attributes—power and efficiency—into a single product that would have been unthinkable just 10 years ago, like those business-casual sweatpants you can now wear to work. The plug-in hybrid makes the same torque—470 lb-ft—as the V-8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392, which is rated at just 14 mpg combined.

2021 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon 4xe
In Car and Driver testing, a $62,415 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, which makes it quicker than anything with recirculating-ball steering needs to be. (The Rubicon 392, a vehicle designed around absurd excess, should be about a second quicker, but we haven't tested one yet.) You'll have to shift into 4WD Auto if you want to hustle the plug-in hybrid that hard, because in two-wheel-drive mode the Wrangler throttles the torque, resulting in a 60-mph time that's 1.3 seconds slower.

LOWS: Sluggish in Electric mode, clunky in Hybrid mode, unexceptional fuel economy once the battery is depleted.

2021 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon 4xe
When the gas and electric powertrains are working in harmony, this Wrangler drives well enough, but transitions between pure electric driving and hybrid operation are can be slow and jarring. If the battery is depleted or the driver asks for more power than the electric motor can deliver, the inline-four often jumps into action with all the grace of a middle schooler at their first dance. There are pregnant pauses long enough that you might ask out loud "What the hell is happening?" before the Jeep starts accelerating with any urgency. Other times the engine makes a rushed, jerky entrance. Driving the Wrangler 4xe in suburban traffic is a constant reminder that calibrating two powertrains to behave as one is more than twice as complicated as tuning a single propulsion source.

An Electric mode remaps the accelerator so that the gas engine kicks on only if you flatten the right pedal. Annoyingly, if you always want to start out driving electrically, you'll have to switch into this mode every time you start the 4xe. But you probably won't, because driving that way, you're moving a 5318-pound brick with just 134 horsepower. That's enough to keep up with traffic, but treating the 4xe as an EV doesn't have the same fun, torque-rich punch we've come to associate with electric driving.

2021 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon 4xe
To get the full fuel-economy benefit, you'll have to stay close to home and plug in often. A 150-mile trip with only a single charge tanked our average fuel economy over roughly 200 miles to a dismal 16 MPGe. Owners who are religious about plugging in and puttering around in Electric mode will certainly fare better, although we suspect most buyers will come up well short of 49 MPGe. Once the battery has been depleted, the 4xe actually gets worse fuel economy than a Wrangler powered by the turbo four with none of the plug-in-hybrid hardware (20 versus 22 mpg combined). Blame the extra 800 pounds that the 4xe carries wherever it goes.

If you can tune out the powertrain's hiccups and awkward pauses, you'll find that the 4xe drives like any other Wrangler. There's enough slack in the steering, squish in the suspension, and imprecision in the all-terrain tires to hide the effect of all of that extra weight on the dynamics. Turns out there is an advantage to a numb and vague chassis after all.

2021 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon 4xe

Wrangler buyers are used to making those compromises. For years, Americans have happily paid a premium for a vehicle that's loud on the highway, thirsty at the pump, and cramped inside in order to own the ultimate do-anything vehicle. As with any other Wrangler, the 4xe can be a family SUV, a convertible, an off-roader, and a daily driver. It can tow 3500 pounds, and it can ford 30 inches of water as easily as it rolls over a curb in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot.

But the 4xe's clumsy powertrain strikes us as a compromise that few people should tolerate, especially given the $10,705 premium over a V-6 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. (Many buyers will be eligible for a $7500 credit on their federal taxes, but even that doesn't balance this equation for us.) Most Jeep shoppers will be better served by accepting that, at least for now, a simpler Wrangler is a better Wrangler.

Jeep has been using the Cherokee label since 1974, and today it is found on two popular SUV models. In 2013, during the final days of the Chrysler Group era, before merging with Fiat, Cherokee officials told The New York Times that no one had consulted them before Jeep renamed Liberty the Cherokee.

According to Hot Tires, under the roof of Stellantis, after the merger of FCA and PSA, Jeep is facing increased pressure to abolish the use of the name of the Native American people. Even Hoskin Jr., the head of Cherokee, said earlier that "Jeep respectfully refused" to change the name. However, The Wall Street Journal, after talks with the head of Stellantis, Carlos Tavarez, now reports that this radical option has not been completely rejected. Although the world's number one carmaker is unsure if there is a "real problem" with the use of the Cherokee name, he has promised that disagreements will be resolved, if any: "If there is a problem, of course we will For now, he doesn't see "anything that could turn out to be negative," adding that the "Cherokee" label represents "Jeep's way of creating passion, our artistic abilities."

Carlos Tavarez continued, saying that Stellantis and Jeep are "ready to accept everything, to the point where we make decisions with the right people and without intermediaries." The newly formed concern is fully aware that this is a topic that should be taken lightly, given the popularity of Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. Not only that, but there is also a new Grand Cherokee L seven-seater, which will arrive in 2022, which will also have to get a new name.

The renewed negotiations between Stellantis and Cherokee stem from a statement made by Chuck Hoskin Jr. in February: "I'm sure the intentions are good, but it doesn't do us any honor to have our name attached to the side of the car." The new name would be a big undertaking in terms of marketing, but it seems that Carlos Tavarez is open to the idea of rebranding his successful SUV models.
