First ride - New Opel Astra

It is easy to pretend to be smart in a bar conversation and say that the new Astra was a remix of the Peugeot 308 launched a little later, because "Peugeot ate Opel". To overthrow something like that means to deny the work of an army of Opel engineers to build a car based on common technology, which will rightfully bear the respectable badge "Made in Germany".

And that badge is credited with the nearly 90-year-long evolution of the model.

New Mercedes EQE ride review

Verdict

Mercedes has to condense the EQS’s fast, smooth and refined formula down into the EQE, and we’d already say it has a strong real-world electric saloon on its hands.

Mercedes is embroiled in an arms race with Audi and BMW in the push towards electrification, but while the EQS limo has impressed us, it’s further down the range where the battle will be won or lost. That means cars like the EQE – in effect, a rival for the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan.

Anyone who’s owned a large executive saloon over the years should also be interested in the EQE, because in the medium to long term, this model will ultimately replace Mercedes’ long-lived E-Class. And now we’ve had a chance to ride in a late prototype of the new model, near the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart.

In its current form, the E-Class isn’t far off a limousine in size, with an overall length approaching five metres. There’s not much between the old stalwart and the EQE on that score, but as you might expect, the EV is slightly wider and, yes, a little taller.

Our EQE 350 prototype has a single motor mounted at the rear, producing 288bhp and 530Nm, enough to take a car weighing in excess of two tonnes from 0-62mph in less than six seconds, and on to a top speed of 131mph. Those numbers won’t quite trouble a Taycan or a Model S but then, Merc’s AMG division already has plans for at least two faster EQE variants.

There’s a 90kWh (usable) battery, delivering up to 410 miles of range on the WLTP test cycle, and the EQE can be recharged at speeds of up to 170kW; fast but, again, a step behind what’s offered by Porsche and Tesla. Mercedes clearly believes that since it can add more than 150 miles of range in barely 15 minutes, when connected to the right charger, it’s quick enough.

Our ride reveals that the same could apply to the EQE 350’s performance, because it feels alert and rapid. You don’t get that sledgehammer slug in the kidneys as with some fast electric saloons, but the delivery of that 530Nm is instant, and it’s hard to see how you’d ever consider it slow.

The ride is comfortable and controlled, with a cushioning quality over scarred road surfaces and decent resistance to body lean in corners, but it’s worth pointing out that our test car was fitted with air suspension that may be optional in the UK. It certainly feels like a base that could cope with extra performance, and that’s what AMG will deliver with the EQE 43 and 53 models. These four-wheel-drive editions will boast twin motors for outputs of 469bhp/860Nm and up to 677bhp/1,000Nm, enough for the 0-62mph time to tumble to 3.3 seconds.

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The Chevy Trailblazer returned to the lineup last year, slimmer, cheaper, more stylish and less powerful than in its formative years. So for 2022 the pert little SUV isn’t changed, aside from a heated steering wheel on top models and some air-conditioning improvements.

Front-drive models use a 1.2-liter turbo-3 rated at 137 hp, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). All-wheel-drive models use the 1.3-liter version making 155 hp and mated to a 9-speed automatic.

The EPA says the 1.2-liter gets 29/31/30 mpg with front-wheel drive, and 26/30/28 mpg with all-wheel-drive. The 1.3-liter gets 29 mpg city, 33 highway, 31 combined with front-wheel drive.

The NHTSA gives it five overall stars in safety, while the IIHS hasn’t tested it yet. Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking and eight airbags, including knee airbags for front passengers. Adaptive cruise control is optional on LT and higher grades.

Model Lineup

Made in South Korea, the Trailblazer comes as an LS, LT, rugged-looking Activ and sporty-looking RS.

The $22,795 LS is equipped with active safety features, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and alloy wheels.

The $25,340 LT adds cruise control and has more available options, including a black roof and adaptive cruise control.

All-wheel drive costs about $2,000 more, depending on the trim level.

A fully-loaded Trailblazer can push $33,000.

Exterior

The Trailblazer isn’t as playfully styled as some rivals, but it has a nice, cohesive look. The base LS trim is a bit bland, but the LT brings stylish wheels and a fashionable black-painted roof that works well on this small SUV.

Interior

The cabin is less interesting than the body, with a bland dash that’s no less functional for its simplicity. Activ and RS models have colorful trim that bring some style, at least. There’s good small-item storage and the materials have a nice look and feel, in higher trim levels. LT and above come with a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat that offers good all-day support.

There’s more interior space in this pint-sized SUV than might be expected. Five adults may be wishful thinking, but four are comfortably accommodated, with plenty of cargo space—25 cubic feet—for their gear.

Active noise canceling helps make the Trailblazer fairly quiet for a vehicle this inexpensive.

Driving Impressions

With just 137 hp and a CVT in front-wheel-drive form, the Trailblazer is not quick. All-wheel-drive versions have 155 hp and more torque, plus a relative gem of a 9-speed automatic transmission. It’s not perfect but it’s better than the CVT.

The ride is compliant and comfortable, even with the bigger wheels on upper models. The steering is well weighted, although the handling is nothing special (it would be a surprise if it were). The Activ has an off-roadish suspension, without affecting the quality of the ride on the highway.

Final Word

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer fills a void, and it’s hard to beat if what you need is an affordable small SUV with all-wheel drive. Stick with the LT or above for the more powerful engine.

Mercedes-AMG EQE

With the EQE model, Mercedes has shown how sporty and comfortable an electric business sedan can be. According to the factory, the car combines dynamic performance and comfortable travel - and sets new standards in its class.

As a reminder, the EQE is 4946 mm long, 1961 mm wide and 1512 mm high, while the wheels are 19 to 21 inches. Also, the EQE has a long wheelbase (the platform is Electric Vehicle Architecture - EVA), which has enabled a spacious interior inspired by the larger EQS.

The MBUX Hyperscreen (three screens with a total width of 141 cm) also stands out, and the air suspension should also be mentioned.

In order to attract even more attention (and of course new customers), Mercedes has now prepared two new sports AMG versions in the EQE range, namely EQE 43 4MATIC and EQE 53 4MATIC +.

The weaker EQE 43 4MATIC has two electric motors with a total of 350 kW / 476 hp and 858 Nm (with all-wheel drive), so from 0 to 100 km / h it accelerates in 4.2 seconds and can reach el. limited to 210 km / h.

With a single charge of 90.6 kWh lithium-ion batteries can cover 462-533 km, while on a fast charger in 15 minutes it is possible to recharge the batteries for 180 km.

The more powerful variant of the EQE 53 4MATIC + also has two electric motors, but here with a combined 460 kW / 626hp and 950 Nm of torque. This is enough to accelerate to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds, while the top speed is 220 km / h. Here is the fact that the autonomy with one battery charge is 444-518 km.

Also, customers will be offered the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package, which includes 505 kW / 687 hp and 1000 Nm, which allows acceleration to 100 km / h in 3.3 seconds and a maximum of 240 km / h.

Mercedes-AMG EQE versions also come with AMG Ride Control + air suspension, steering and rear wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, wheels up to 21 inches, sports braking system with 415 mm and 378 mm discs (AMG carbon-ceramic is also available as an option) brakes), front grille with AMG mark and vertical chrome accents, sporty front bumper and splitter, larger rear spoiler, AMG sports seats, AMG steering wheel with flattened lower part, sport pedals, red contrast stitching, AMG floor mats, as well as optional MBUX.

Only last year the Genesis G80 was all new from the ground up. With a choice of two punchy turbo powertrains and the latest iteration of the Genesis design language, we found much to like in the Korean automaker's third-generation mid-size luxury sedan. All we wanted was a touch more athleticism. Apparently, we rubbed the right lamp, because for 2022 our wish has been granted in the form of the new G80 Sport.

Credit also goes to the Sport Prestige model's rear-wheel steering, which turns the wheels in phase above 37 mph to enable more stable handling. Below that speed, they'll turn in the opposite direction by up to 2 degrees. The turning radius is nearly two feet tighter as a result, with a full circle complete in a relatively trim 36.2 feet.

HIGHS: Quicker than before, improved grip, sumptuous interior refinement.

One change we didn't wish for: All-wheel drive is now standard on every G80 Sport. And since every V-6-powered G80 is now a G80 Sport, that means if you want rear-wheel drive, you'll have to settle for the 300-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder model. Rather unsportsmanlike, if you ask us. But genies are known for loose interpretations. At least Genesis made an effort to shave some mass from the updated Sport model, which at 4495 pounds weighs 163 pounds less than the last all-wheel-drive six-cylinder G80 we tested, a 2018 model.

The 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 remains a powerful and willing accomplice. Its peak torque of 391 lb-feet is available from 1300 to 4500 rpm, delivering a reassuring amount of thrust in practically any situation. It truly excels at midrange acceleration—30-to-50-mph passing maneuvers take a respectable 2.7 seconds—providing a punch of seamless power on demand accompanied by a pleasing, muted growl. The engine note is electronically enhanced through the speakers, and we appreciate the ability to turn it off completely (take note, BMW). Back in Michigan, we recorded 72 decibels of noise inside our test car at full throttle and a hushed 66 decibels at a 70-mph cruise—improvements of 2 and 3 decibels, respectively, over the previous version.

LOWS: Fuel economy trails its German rivals, all-wheel drive only, no wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity.

 2022 genesis g80 sport

While we lament the loss of a true rear-wheel-drive model, at least the AWD system can shuttle 100 percent of the engine's torque to the rear wheels. The eight-speed automatic is also quick to respond, though the tiny shift paddles require a long reach and will have you wishing for longer fingers. Exclusive to the Prestige trim is a Sport+ mode that features an aggressively quick shift pattern, a true manual mode, and a more permissive stability control. Sadly, our Michigan test car rolled on 20-inch Pirelli P Zero All-Season tires instead of the optional summer rubber. But it still posted a decent 0.88 g of grip around the skidpad, which is 0.04 g more than before, albeit less than the 0.91 g we saw from a rear-drive four-cylinder model. The Sport's 170-foot stop from 70 mph also is 10 feet shorter than what its predecessor could manage.

Those chasing pink slips on Friday nights will appreciate the addition of launch control, which along with the lighter curb weight helped our test car hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds—0.2 second quicker than the 2018 car. The quarter-mile now gets done in 13.2 seconds at 107 mph, a 0.3-second and 3-mph improvement. Even its 5-to-60-mph rolling-start time is a noticeable 0.4 second quicker.

2022 genesis g80 sport
Compared to the last Audi A6 3.0T and BMW 540i xDrive that we tested, the new G80 Sport essentially runs door handle to door handle with both. The outlier is Mercedes-Benz's E450 4Matic, which bolts to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and runs a 12.9-second quarter-mile at 108 mph. Of course, enjoy the G80's power a little too much and you'll average close to the 15 mpg that we saw, though the EPA estimates that a combined 20 mpg is doable in normal driving. Unfortunately, that figure is 4 to 5 mpg less than the combined estimates for its German rivals.

The G80's handsome sheetmetal receives a mild steroidal injection at each end. Up front, the lower valance now tucks up on either side toward the center for a more muscular look. The rear bumper is equally as sculpted, featuring beefy cutouts for a glimpse of the tire contact patches. A saucier color palette includes Siberian Ice and Cavendish Red, a hue reportedly inspired by the rubicund mud of Prince Edward Island. The G80's lines also work with darker, moodier finishes, such as our example's $1500 matte Makalu Gray paint.

2022 genesis g80 sport
Inside, bolder colors and materials continue this sportier theme. Metal-finished pedals add bling beneath your feet. Aluminum or carbon-fiber trim replaces wood throughout the cabin, while a new steering wheel has three spokes instead of two. The herringbone pattern on the seats has been dialed up to 11, with sharply ribbed diagonal lines converging in a V-shaped exclamation point. When decked out in red or black with contrasting stitching, the look exudes retro alienlike form that fans of the 1983 miniseries V will appreciate. The "ergo motion" seats trade the pokes and prods of traditional massage for subtle, constant movements meant to gently activate the back muscles. We found the touch-sensitive seat controls to be surprisingly useful: Just grazing a fingertip over a switch reveals its corresponding function on the 14.5-inch touchscreen.

2022 genesis g80 sport
And while that display remains a bit of a reach for casual inputs, the console-mounted rotary knob is easy to master. We find it curious that wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is still absent, considering its prolific availability on lower-end Hyundai models. Elsewhere, previously optional amenities are now standard, including heating for the steering wheel and rear seats, a surround-view camera, and the superb 21-speaker Lexicon audio system. The result is a $64,795 base price. While that figure is slightly more than those of its German competitors, our loaded test car's $72,595 ask undercuts the near-$80K outlays that rival Audi, BMW, and Mercedes sedans can command when heavily optioned.

The G80's upgrades, however minor, might seem fruitless in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs. In their short time on the scene, the GV70 and GV80 have already commanded roughly 60 percent of Genesis sales. But reps for Genesis insist that the SUVs have also provided a halo effect for the rest of the lineup, luring in buyers new to the brand. Offering a viable sedan alternative is an important part of the portfolio, they claim, and justifies such an investment in the G80 only one year after its launch. Just as important based on its improved performance, the new Sport model adds a worthwhile spark to the G80's already impressive package.

Jeep Meridian announced

Last year, Jeep unveiled the Commander, a seven-seater model for Latin America, while this year it is announcing the Meridian, which is basically the Indian version of the Commander.

It also means that it uses the Jeep Compass as a basis, only with a longer rear overhang and extended wheelbase.

Meridian will also have a larger rear door to facilitate access to the rear seats. The new Jeep Meridian is still covered in camouflage, but it is expected that it will not look much different from the Commander for Latin America.

The news states that during the development, Jeep tested the prototypes on the long road from Kashmir to Kaniakumari of about 3,500 kilometers.

Some unofficial information says that the Jeep Meridian will get a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine with 200 hp, with 4x4 drive and a 9-speed automatic transmission. A mild-hybrid version is also mentioned.

As things stand now, the Meriadian will be offered in India in a 6- and 7-seater configuration, but more details will follow in the coming months.

A 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a wireless smartphone charger and Android Auto & Apple CarPlay are also provided for the interior.

Meridian will be made in India and the plan is to go on sale by the middle of this year.
